How to tell a genuine Casio from a fake

Copies of the popular Casio models are common, and some are good enough to pass a quick glance. These are checks you can do yourself, in a shop or at home, before you hand over any money.
1. Read the caseback
Every genuine Casio has its model number and a separate module number stamped or printed on the caseback — the module is the movement inside, and it is usually three or four digits. Both should be crisp and evenly spaced, not shallow or smudged. Check that the model number on the caseback is the same one printed on the box.
Casio publishes the module number for each model in its own manuals. If the caseback says one module and the model is normally sold with another, treat that as a serious warning.
2. Look closely at the dial printing
On a real Casio the lettering is sharp all the way to the edge of each character, even the small print. Copies often show slightly thick, fuzzy, or unevenly spaced text, and the markers can sit a fraction out of line with the minute track. A phone camera zoomed in will show this more clearly than your eye.
3. Try the backlight and the buttons
On digital models the backlight should come on evenly across the whole display rather than glowing brightly at one edge. Buttons should press with a clean, definite click and spring straight back. Mushy or rattly buttons are a common weak point on copies.
4. Check the strap and the buckle
Casio marks its buckles and clasps — usually with the brand name, sometimes with the material. The stamping should be even and centred. On resin straps the moulding is smooth with no rough seam along the edge, and the keeper does not feel loose.
5. Ask for the box and paperwork
A new Casio comes with its box, an instruction manual for that specific module, and warranty paperwork. Missing paperwork is not proof of a fake on its own, but a seller who cannot produce any of it for a watch they are selling as new is worth questioning.
6. Be suspicious of the price
This is the check that catches most people. If a model is selling for a fraction of what every other seller in Sri Lanka charges, the likeliest explanations are that it is a copy, or that it is missing the box and paperwork.
